A VICIOUS BEAUTY
Working closely with director Nicolas Winding Refn we created a campaign for his feature The Neon Demon, starting with the international teaser poster. Presenting a dark mix of horror with LA, the poster was the first promotional item to be released of the film.
We then moved onto the title and credit sequences, again working closely to combine a rich glittery backdrop with a sense of impending darkness, reminiscent of 60’s title sequences. Combining our vision with CGI genius Ben Ib and a score by Cliff Martinez, the front sequence had to be fluffy and classy with a glossy fashion aesthetic. We achieved this by working through an array of colours, changing the mood as we go, eventually culminating in an overpowering curtain of glitter that seemed somehow both beautiful and dangerous. The end sequence had to still have a sense of the cosmetic, but this time we wanted to go much darker. Built entirely in CGI, we chose to simulate a deathly female body being gradually covered in makeup. Once you see the film, the reason will become clear.
Eventually we end up at the UK release campaign, where we combine the teaser with new images to create a stunning visual which we then applied to motion and digital.
